Open Source Operating Systems
Open Source software is software that can be modified by users because a copy of the original source code is stored on the program. Most software cant be changed because its not in a format that people can underdstand how to change or is copyrighted and under protection of law. Open source software can be changed however and if the user knows what they are doing they can make the program very useful to their needs. Open source software has created great programs that are bug free and and easy for the users to work with. Open source has created such great things as the internet.
A program is classified as open source if its license is made for specific guidelines to make a program work. The guidelines for the licensing have to have free redistribution, an accessible source code, derived works which allows for modifications, integrity of the author’s source code, no discrimination against persons or groups, distrubution of licensce which means all the rights of the software are the same for everyone, the license must not be specific to a product, and the license must be technology-neutral. If a program meets those guidelines it is considered open source. When many people now use this software and update and make changes they make the software better and then the software just keeps getting better.
